Mental Health & Wellness
The results are in! A new survey from Healthy Minds validates what we all already knew in our hearts.
Reason No. 1
A new poll reveals that a strong majority of pet owners feel that owning a cat or a dog positively impacts their mental health. Now before arguments start, for the record, BOTH dog and cat owners responded to this poll of over 2000 adults. So whether you are team dog or team cat, you are covered either way.
What I found most interesting about this survey was that an overwhelming 69% of responders reported that pets actually help reduce stress and anxiety. I have certainly seen this to be true in my practice, with many families choosing to bring "fur babies" into their lives.
Reason No. 2
In addition to the straightforward mental health benefits you may receive from owning a pet, there is something else to consider.
69% of people polled reported pets provide unconditional love and support.
There is certainly a reason that dogs are called "man's best friend."
Reason No. 3
Surveys indicated that pets are considered "true friends", that offer a calming presence and companionship. This can be especially important for people who live alone, or who have a roommate or significant other who frequently travels.
There is something SO nice about coming home and having your pet greet you by the door.
