So many of the parents I work with are used to excelling — in their careers, their relationships, everywhere else in their lives. Then they become parents, and that same competence doesn't seem to translate the way they expected. I was recently featured on Modern Mom Alchemy's Press page writing about exactly this — and wanted to share it here as well.
This piece looks at why feeling overwhelmed by parenting isn't a sign of personal failure — it's often a mismatch between the invisible mental load of running a household and a person's actual capacity in that moment, especially when sleep disruption and constant comparison to a curated version of other families' lives are added to the mix. It also talks through why "just try harder" is rarely the right answer, and what actually helps — from delegation to, when appropriate, a formal mental health evaluation.
