How to Find Happiness

Too often, I ask my clients, what is your goal for mental health treatment. A common response that I receive, is “I just want to be happy”. I hear you, you deserve happiness. We all do! But why does it often feel so elusive and so hard to achieve? In this post, I’m going to provide a tangible way for you to work towards this goal.

Having fun can increase happiness

Stop Worrying

I know this is easier said than done, but oftentimes the more you worry about feeling happy, the harder and more elusive it feels. This study found that participants who over emphasized feeling happy, actually ended up disappointed, and alas, LESS happy. Instead, pick a more achievable goal, that will naturally set you on the path towards happiness organically.

Have Fun

So what is that natural path to happiness you may ask? It’s going to sound so simple, but I am serious when I say, HAVE FUN.  Play a sport, learn an instrument, spend time with your pet. Whatever it is, pick a time to schedule doing something fun in your day, rather than filling your free time endlessly scrolling social media.

Feeling Stuck?

Take time to brainstorm the last time that you actually participated in an enjoyable activity. Think of what you were doing, where you were located and who you were with. Whatever it was, do it again!

In Conclusion

I know it seems obvious, but so many of us use our precious free time on completely unenjoyable activities. Becoming more intentional about making time for fun, can set you on a path towards happiness and overall wellness. If this advice is feeling out of reach, you may be suffering from anxiety or depression. Talking with a trusted psychiatrist can help you work towards your goals.
